FICTION of ELAINE ORR
My fiction alternates between thoughtful, such as Biding Time, to cozy mysteries -- the
Jolie Gentil Series,
Secrets of the Gap, and Searching for Secrets. Why write fiction? After
all, as Walter Smith said, "There's nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a
typewriter and open up a vein."  Just a vein. You have lots of them, so what's one lost
in writing a story or novel?
Jolie Gentil Series Cozy Mystery Series

When the Carny Comes to Town - Third of the Jolie series
Though she never liked the idea of sitting on the plank above the dunk tank for the food pantry's
fundraiser at the carnival, Jolie never dreamed what Scoobie saw that day would leave him battling for
his life. Scoobie's ex-con mother shows up and there's a murder to add to the mix.  Soon Jolie is doing a
lot more than appraising real estate, though even that is complicated by home burglars.  Jolie
grudgingly seeks help from her nemesis--reporter George Winters--and tries to stay a step ahead of a
kidnapper and murderer so she can take charge of her world again.   Available for
Kindle and Nook,
and for other formats via
Smashwords.  Watch for the paperback in late February 2012.

Appraisal for Murder - First of the Jolie series
Jolie Gentil dumps a husband who put their assets in the toilets that masquerade as slot machines in
Jersey and moves to Aunt Madge's B&B in Ocean Alley. As she reestablishes friendships, Jolie dodges a
low-level wise guy, and (oops!) finds a dead body. The late Ruth Riordan was Aunt Madge's closest
friend and mother to Michael, a former classmate who can still push all of Jolie's buttons.  Jolie and
Aunt Madge seem to be the only ones who think the police are wrong to accuse Michael of murder.
The mundane work of appraising real estate and dodging suggestions that she go to the ten-year high
school reunion becomes mixed with calls from reporters and scary suggestions from wise guy Pedone,
who wants her to repay her ex-husband's gambling debts.  Jolie's old buddie Scoobie looks down and
out, but he may be smarter than anyone.  Can they help prevent a miscarriage of justice and live to tell
about it?  Between Aunt Madge's prune-eating dogs and hiding out on Halloween, humor keeps them
company every step of the way.
Appraisal for Murder is available in paperback or as an ebook from
Amazon (Kindle) and in all other e-formats at Smashwords.   Read Chapter One.

Rekindling Motives - Second of the Jolie series
Jolie Gentil is appraising the vacant Tillotson-Fisher house and finds the skeleton of Richard Tillotson
hidden in an antique attic wardrobe. He vanished just after his sister married his business partner in
1929. Jolie sees a link to the Fisher family's Prohibition era business.  As she and friends Scoobie and
Ramona go through the attic, they gather clues from old photo albums and ledgers. The present day
murder of Richard's former girlfriend, Mary Doris, tells them they're on the right track. Did the secret
she kept all these years finally kill her? Between running the food pantry at Christmas time and
escaping a burning building, they hope to figure out who the modern-day killer is before someone else
gets hurt.

Rekindling Motives is available in paperback or as an ebook from Amazon (Kindle) or Smashwords (all
e-formats).

It's great to order on line in electronic and paperback form, but don't forget your local
bookstores and libraries.  Most can order copies for you.  Two stores that keep my
books on the shelves are
O'Town Books in Ottumwa, IA and the gift shop of
Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie, IN.
